A NATIONAL leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Ogbonnaya Onu, has said that the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration would strictly adhere to the rule of law in administering the country.

He said the era of government and its personnel treating citizens with disrespect and engaging in impunity was gone.

The APC chief spoke as a guest of honour at the investiture ceremony of former Minister of Education and erudite legal icon, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, held in Enugu.

Describing the emergence of President Buhari as a blessing, the former Abia State governor who was also the National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), said the current administration would not take Nigerians and the country’s constitution for granted.

He pointed out such an emphasis on the rule of law would foster good governance and ensure that “no Nigerian would be above the law and every Nigerian would be belo w the law.”

According to him, this will help enthrone justice in the polity, which he said, is a necessary ingredient for peace, progress and prosperity to thrive in the new Nigeria that is envisioned by the APC-led Federal Government.

Expressing confidence that Nigeria would take her rightful place in the comity of democratic nations of the world, the APC leader said that placing emphasis on those worthy attributes that will strengthen the self-worth of the individual and enhance the respect and dignity of Nigeria as Africa’s most populous nation, were all that the country needed to jump-start its growth.

Onu canvassed the importance of stimulating vibrant patriotic commitment of the citizenry in nation-building and gave assurance that conscious efforts rooted in respect for the rule of law would be pursued to secure the confidence of Nigerian in governance and release their happiness as worthy citizens governed in a nation of laws.

Speaking at the occasion, the award recipient, Prof. Nwabueze, extolled the unique leadership attributes of Dr. Onu, describing him as an “incorruptible, first class material”, who has remained committed to the nation’s search for enduring democracy.

The event attracted many eminent Nigerians, notable among whom was the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe.
