Clerics, others pray for successful election

THE Prelate Methodist Church (Emeritus), Sunday Ola Makinde, has called on politicians clamouring for change to first exemplify change of attitude, which is the ultimate.

   Speaking Sunday evening at a prayer rally towards the general elections organised by Civic Consciousness Initiative (CCI) made up of group of concerned Christian leaders in Lagos State in conjunction with the Lagos State Government, which took place at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Makinde said he was at the prayer rally because he believed in the power of prayer by calling on God to effect the necessary change that the nation needs.

   “I know we are in a critical period in Nigeria and if we do not get it right now, we are in trouble and that is why we have come to seek the face of God in prayer,” he said.    

   Also speaking at the prayer rally, the Chairman, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), South-West, Magnus Atilade called for the unity of the nation. He said what Nigeria needs now is prayer unto God to bring the right change for Nigerians.     

   He lamented that God gave Nigeria every blessing including wealth, good weather, arable land, mineral resources, human capital but that the nation lacks good leadership.

   The vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Candidate (APC), Prof. Osinbajo said corruption is not in God’s dictionary and He wants a government that would create employment for its citizens, take care of the less privileged and create an enabling environment. 

   Meanwhile, The Lord Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Rt. Revd. James Odedeji has cautioned politicians as the nation approaches the next elections, advising that it is not a matter of life and death to win.

   Speaking at the 70th birthday anniversary of Joseph Abiodun Falode at St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Idimu, Lagos, the cleric said that the idea of blackmailing others, setting other people’s house on fire is not the best for the polity.

He lamented the bitterness and the deep seated anger with which parties go about campaigning and advised that his should be obliterated, adding that anyone who do not win this year, if God wills, could win come another four years.

Meanwhile, The General Overseer, Bible Life Church Cathedral, Bishop Leonard Umunna has called on the government to come up with a new constitution that will address the various problems confronting the nation and solve the issue of ethnicity.

Addressing the media over the weekend in his Church in Lagos, Ummuna said there was no hope that if any of the two leading parties wins the election, the enormous problems confronting the nation would be solved.

“If Buhari of APC wins, there will be problem and if the incumbent wins again, fire is on the mountain” he said.
