THE Head of Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Dr. Olajumoke Yacob-Haliso, has called on Nigerians to turn out in large numbers and vote for the right candidate during the next general election.

Speaking in an interview in Lagos, she said that nobody should sit on the fence during the election.

“ The decision not to vote is a decision to allow others to lead one in a direction one may not want.

“So the first thing is to be part of the process. The second thing is to vote wisely. I think for most Nigerians that is the little we can do. Once they get to government they don’t ask us of anything. They go ahead to run policies that are sometimes anti-people. That is why the person we choose must be the right person.”

She regretted that a lot of times electorates do not even know what programme the candidates have for them.

“This is because the candidates have not gone to the grassroots to disseminate information. So when they get into the government, nobody knows the programme they have for them. It is quite unfortunate.”

“Let us now look for candidates who have a clear vision, candidates we know that we can hold accountable. The roles of the citizens are to institute the leadership that we work for.”

She recalled that one of the good things about this dispensation is that there is real competition between the politicians.

“ I think there is competition between the two major parties as well as other who are also competing to take over leadership at various levels of government.”
