‘Ekiti Election Affecting Political Campaigns’

ALL Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate for the Anaocha/Njikoka/Dunukofia federal constituency seat in the House of Representatives, Chief Dozie Nwankwo, has said the last governorship election in Ekiti State has influenced the way politicians now relate to voters as they canvass for votes. 

   In an interview with The Guardian, Nwankwo noted that the idea of stomach infrastructure has become a veritable instrument for voter preference stressing, however, that instead of being swayed by election induced handouts, voters are warming up to politicians that have kept touch with them before the electioneering season.

   Nwankwo, who has been organizing a rural reach out programme through his Dozie Nwankwo Foundation, explained that by intervening in the areas of healthcare, provision of potable water and award of scholarship, he was able to know the challenges facing people in the rural communities.

 He contended that where the emphasis is on perfunctory handouts during electioneering campaigns, the people are wont to treat such gestures with suspicion, stressing that Nigerian voters have matured to the extent that they now focus on the antecedents and track records of candidates in the election.

    Nwankwo said: “There is no doubt that the programme contributed to the positive disposition of voters towards our candidacy; but the fact remains that I am very passionate about assisting the government to provide social amenities in the communities and help in the development of my immediate environment.”

   The APGA candidate explained that the present volatility in the international price of oil calls for creative budgeting system, pointing out that if voted into office, he intends to involve his constituents in budget evaluation.
