Unknown gunmen, yesterday, attacked Umutu Police station in Ndowka East Council of Delta State, killing a senior Police officer and two rank and file officers, two days after a police officer was killed at Akwukwu-Igbo in Oshimili North Council of the state.

The Guardian gathered that the incident happened about 1:30am, as the bandits attempted to break into the station. It was also gathered that two of the bandits were killed by Police operatives who repelled their attack on the station.

Confirming the incident, spokesperson, Bright Edafe, said two cops died during the attack, while another died due to high blood pressure occasioned by the incident, saying the intention of the attackers was to burn down the station but were resisted.

AT least five gunmen have been killed by the Police during a failed attempt to attack Police Division in Eleme Local Council of Rivers State yesterday. Six of the hoodlums who tried to escape were arrested. It was also leant that Police operatives, following an intelligence report, ambushed the gunmen who had camped in a forest between Oyigbo and Eleme Local Councils. On sighting the police, the hoodlums opened fire leading to a gun battle, which left five of the gunmen killed and scores arrested. Spokesman of the state Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, said he was yet to get report of the incident at press time.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Police Command has repelled a mob attack on one of its stations in Calabar.

The station, which is located in Ikot Ikpai, Ikot Omin was almost burnt down yesterday by angry mobs, who accused the Police of killing someone. It was gathered that yesterday morning, a group of aggrieved residents stormed the station with a body, a development that led to an argument between the policemen on duty and the aggrieved residents.

When journalists visited yesterday, remains of burnt tyres littered the front of the station, but the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), J. Iyauyushi, declined comment. However, Commissioner of Police, Sikiru Akande, said there was an attempt to burn the station, but they were able to bring the situation under control.
