The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to introduce a phased digital passport renewal system starting November 1, 2024, with the initial rollout in Canada.

The new online platform will allow Nigerians to renew their passports without needing to visit NIS offices, enhancing convenience and accessibility for citizens abroad.

The announcement, shared on the NIS’s official X account, outlined that after the Canada launch, the digital service will expand to the UK, US, and Italy by November 15, with a global rollout, including Nigeria, scheduled for December 1.

The NIS added that Nigerians can access the service via its mobile app, soon available on Google Play and the App Store, or through the NIS portal.

“In its continued effort to serve the Nigerian public more efficiently and create a functional system that meets global standards, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a new contactless and issuance process starting from November 1st, 2024.

“Individuals will be able to apply to renew their international passports from the comfort of their homes without having to visit any NIS office,” it stated.

The move is part of the agency’s goal to streamline processes and meet global service standards.
