SANUSI-2--

Emir calls for peaceful general election

AMIDST high-level celebration marking the historic and momentous occasion in the ancient city of Kano, its new Emir, Muhammad Sanusi II, was officially coronated and the oath of office administered at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano, Saturday. It was witnessed by an array of government officials, politicians, elder statesmen, governors, traditional rulers, the business community, diplomats and thousands of well-wishers among others.

Sanusi was taken through the process of the Oath of Office led by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Muhammad Sani Zahraddeen, which served as a prelude to the coronation. After being adorned with the royal regalia, the Emir was eventually regularised by the king makers of the Emirate council. It was followed by the paying of homage to the Emir by other royal personalities.

In his acceptance speech, the Emir commended all those that were involved in one way or the other in his choice as the 57th Emir of Kano and 14th Emir of Kano in the Fulani dynasty, adding that it was Allah that gives power to whoever He wishes and takes away power from whoever He so wishes.

He assured that he would do his best as the Emir to strengthen the peaceful co-existence between all adherents of different faiths and ethnic nationalities in the country.

“We are calling on all our traditional title holders to do their best in the areas of peace, security, education, especially girl-child education and health matters, so that we can have a society worthy of emulation across the globe,” he called.

After praying that may God give Nigeria the best leaders as election was fast approaching, he called on the politicians to make sure that the forthcoming election is peaceful and credible.

Earlier, Kano state governor, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso revealed that the process that saw to the emergence of the Emir, which took place last June, was meticulous, transparent and highly consultative.

Kwankwaso said that the celebration was to preserve and consolidate the traditional heritage and maintained that the Emir is one who loves to uphold justice.

In attendance were the former Heads of State, Generals Yakubu Gowon and Muhammadu Buhari, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, governors of Rivers, Kaduna, Jigawa, Zamfara, Edo, Borno, Sokoto, Niger, Yobe and Kwara states.

Also among the dignitaries that attended were the Oba of Lagos; the former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abdurrahman Dambazau; US Ambassador in Nigeria, British High Commissioner, Canadian High Commissioner, APC leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, diplomats from other countries, Emirs from different states of the federation amongst others.

It was glaring that there was no delegation from the federal government, an action that did not receive wide approval though others explained it could be due to the busy campaign schedule of the President seeking re-election.

Large screens were seen placed in some places across the city of Kano for the people in the street to see a live coverage of the event that lasted three hours at the coronation hall, Kano Government House.
