Mixed reactions trail polls shift by INEC in Ebonyi
THREE political parties in Ebonyi state , the People Democratic Party (PDP) Labour Party (LP) and All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) yesterday aired their views on the postponement of the general elections that would have started on Saturday.
While the PDP and Labour Party said the postponement is in the interest of the nation’s democracy , the All Progressive Grand Alliance described it as ‘evil and calculated plan by Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC and the Presidency to rig the election in favour of PDP.
The candidate of PDP for Ezza North/Ishielu Federal Constituency, Anayo Edwin noted that the postponement would further assist the military in its fight against insurgency especially in the North East geopolitical zone of the country
On his own the governorship candidate of Labour Party in the state, Sir Edward Nkwegu noted that the decision of INEC was a welcome development adding that security lapses created by insecurity in the North East by Boko Haram should be addressed to give room for effective representation.
Though he noted that it will increase their campaign costs,he agreed however that the postponement is for the overall interest of Nigerians stressing that LP will win the election in the state whenever it holds.
According to him, the safety of INEC officials and the electorates were more important than the actual election stressing the decision of INEC was constitutional and should be taken in good faith.
But the state Chairman of APGA described the postponement as evil and wicked plan by INEC chairman Prof Attahiru Jega and President Goodluck Jonathan to rig the election in favour of the People Democratic Party PDP.
According to him why would INEC shift the election after the candidates and political parties have spent much money in their campaigns?
He said that INEC sited security concerns as reason for the election shift “and I ask if all the security outfits in the country will be changed and replaced by new people in the next six weeks to enable them get it right.?”
