THE Federal Government  has said that Nigerian troops on peace keeping mission abroad may be recalled back to the country to enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Army in the fight against Boko Haram.

The Co=ordinator, National Information Centre (NIC), Mr. Mike Omeri, disclosed this Thursday in Abuja at a routine security briefing.

According to him: “There is a need for troop surge in operational areas which may require recalling Nigerian troops from peace keeping missions abroad to enhance the operational capabilities of the Nigerian Army.

Omeri explained that “in the face of the various challenges  militating against the full operationalization of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) and its apparent collapse, a number of African countries in Niamey, Niger Republic on January 20, 2015 with the sole aim of seeking authorization from the UN Security Council, through the African Union, to set up, fund and deploy a more effective multinational force to fight Boko Haram.

The NIC coordinator added that while it is expected that the meeting will yield positive results, the Nigerian position at the meeting remains that the challenges of Boko Haram insurgency, though a Nigerian is a threat to regional and international peace and security which requires the concerted action of Nigeria and friendly countries to combat.

“Nigeria and her neighbours should improve on the effective management of their borders, while the Abuja Regional Intelligence Fusion Unit should collaborate with the Intelligence Coordination Centre based in Chad, in intelligence sharing.

“Offer of military and humanitarian assistance from regional and international bodies should be deployed along Nigeria’s common borders with neighbouring countries, with a clear mandate, command and control, as well as rule of engagement.

Speaking on the newly released video by Boko Haram leader, Abubakar  Shekau, Omeri stated that crimes committed against Nigerians in Baga or anywhere in the country will not go unpunished.

“Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau purported to have issued a statement claiming responsibility for the recent deadly attack in Baga, Borno state. Government is working to verify further claims contained in the said video.”
