The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, Peter Obi, has celebrated the election of Nigerian-born Kemi Badenoch as the new leader of the Conservative Party in the United Kingdom.

Obi described her achievement as a testament to the global potential of Nigerian and African youth.

The Labour Party Leader writing on his X-handle on Sunday said that Badenoch’s rise to leadership comes at a time when many Nigerians are questioning their potential amidst current challenges.

“Badenoch’s election is a powerful testament to the strength of diversity and what can be achieved when competence, capacity, integrity, and inclusivity are prioritised,” Obi stated.

He noted that her success highlights a stark contrast in Nigeria’s leadership, where younger, competent leaders are often overlooked for older figures who may lack the same drive.

Obi urged Nigerians to use Badenoch’s achievement as an inspiration for change within the country’s leadership structure.

“It is time to move past outdated traditions of tribalism, religious bias, and the ‘my turn’ syndrome and foster an environment that values competence, fresh perspectives, and forward-thinking leadership,” he said.

He concluded with a message of hope, encouraging Nigerians to embrace a new generation of leaders and envision a brighter future for Nigeria and Africa.
