Senior Military Officers To Face Trial For Mutiny

SOME senior officers of the Nigerian military are to face trial for alleged negligence and compromise in the ongoing crack down on insurgents, even as scores of the terrorists were killed during the onslaught in Michika.

  A statement from the Director of Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Chris Olukolade, said some senior officers of the Nigerian Army in command positions of the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) are to be tried for their role in the suspected compromise of the troops tactical strategies that led to the loss of some personnel and war equipment. 

  Olukolade said the officers, who hold key command positions, were “in the process of accounting for their actions leading to the loss of weapons, men and location in their area of responsibility in the mission area. 

  “This is a normal military procedure in major operations or after encounters. The essence is to extract and collate relevant information for subsequent missions. 

  “It could also lead to or determine appropriate disciplinary, where necessary.”

  Meanwhile, the statement further said although normalcy has been restored in Michika and its environs, where the terrorists had attacked furiously in the last few days and the military had to intervene to sack the rampaging insurgents. 

  The statement reads: “An extensive mopping up operation to search for arms or stranded terrorists and other casualties is ongoing in Michika after troops sacked the terrorists, who have been operating in the town and its environ.

  “Troops, who sustained injuries in the operation, are receiving necessary medical attention. 

  “Other troops are continuing the pursuit of those who are on the run from the town. Normalcy has been restored accordingly.”
