Video gives families of Chibok girls new hope

Relatives of some of the Nigerian schoolgirls kidnapped by the Islamic group Boko Haram say they’re relieved to see their daughters in a new video released by the group.

The video was posted on social media by the group Boko Haram. It appears to show recent footage of dozens of the school girls who were kidnapped two years ago from the Chibok school in Nigeria. One of the girls calls on the government to release jailed members of the group and to end its air strikes against Boko Haram camps.

Her father, Yakubu Kabo, says seeing his daughter was a great relief.

“Since the abduction of those girls I didn’t see my girl in those videos, past videos that have been posted, but when I saw her, I’m really.. I’m very happy. I can be able to sleep today, Yakubu said.”

Some 270 girls were abducted from the school. More than 200 are still missing. A group called Bring Back Our Girls stages a daily protest in Abuja, demanding that the government do more to find them. Member Bukky Shonibare says the latest video provides more fuel for their demands.

“It is a confirmation that a lot of the Chibok girls are alive and that they are not dead as has been presumed in order for us to be able to sweep it under the carpet, said Shonibare”

President Muhammadu Buhari has vowed to rescue the girls. The families at the protest are determined to make sure he fulfils that promise.
