Babcock varsity wants violence-free elections

THE Conference of Political Parties in Lagos State (COPPIL) has urged Lagosians to punish incompetent leaders and their party that fielded them by voting them out in the forthcoming general elections.

Speaking during a press conference recently in Lagos, the convener of the group, COPPIL, which consists of twelve registered political parties in Lagos State, Mr. Sunbo Onitiri, said that 16 years were enough for any government to impact positively in the lives of its citizenry, and as such, any government that fails to realise this, should be changed.

He said: “We are calling for a change in Lagos State because the ruling party has failed to deliver its promises to Lagos in the past 16 years. We are tired of a government that does not work for the interest of the people and for that reason, we are seeking change through the candidature of the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP), Jimi Agbaje, giving that he is the most credible, competent, trusted and reliable among the lots.”

In another development, lecturers and students from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, Babcock University, Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, yesterday appealed to members of the community to avoid all manner of violence as the 2015 general elections approach.

The students and their teachers, who embarked on a one-day voters’ education programme to sensitise the electorate within the five communities that make up the Remo area distributing flyers with messages such as ‘Say no to violence’ ‘Your vote is your voice’,  ‘Your vote is your power’ and Your vote is your future’, urged the people not to sell their votes.

Head of the Department, Dr. Olajumoke Yacob–Haliso, said the sensitisation programme was embarked upon to inform the people about the right conduct during the forthcoming general elections.

In her response, wife of the Olofin of Ilishan, Olori Titilayo Sonuga, thanked the university for embarking on the awareness programme, noting that it is a good and noble idea.
