A MEMBER representing Darazo Constituency, Alhaji Kauwa Shehu Damina, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, while Abdulmumni Bala, representing Pali, emerged the Deputy Speaker.

Damina, former Chairman of Darazo Local Council was returned unopposed.

The new Speaker was nominated by Yusuf C. Nuhu, representing Lame Constituency in Toro Local Council and was seconded by Saleh Umar representing Ganjuwa East.

The principal officers were sworn in by the Clerk of the House, Abdulkadir Jafar, who earlier read a letter from the state governor, Mohammed Abubakar, citing Section 3, sub-section 5 of the 1999 Constitution.

In his speech shortly after being sworn in, the new Speaker thanked his colleagues for the confidence they have in him and promised to work in harmony with other arms of government for the development of the state.

Damina said that his priorities, among others, would be members’ welfare, capacity building and training, maintaining cordial relations with the executive, renovation of the Assembly complex and provision of state of the art facilities.

Besides, the North-East Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Sani Al’amin Mohammed, has advised Bauchi State government and the newly-inaugurated state lawmakers to revisit the relocation of headquarters of Tafawa Balewa Local Council to Bununu by the immediate past administration over frequent crisis in the area.

Sani, who stated this yesterday while addressing a press conference shortly after the inauguration of the House in Bauchi, said relocation of the headquarters has distorted brotherhood, cultural value and tradition of living together among the communities in the area.

He said all the advice they gave to the immediate past administration over the removal of the headquarters fall in deaf ears and condemned the suspension of a female lawmaker that represented Bogoro Constituency, Mrs. Rifkatu Samson Danna, in the last Assembly when she opposed the relocation and described it as undemocratic and unconstitutional.

Sani advised that the headquarters of new Sayawa Traditional ruler should be cited where the Sayawa communities want in the interest of peace.

Mohammed, who also said government should revisit the issue and give chance to the new Speaker of House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and the Secretary of the Tertiary Education Funds who were from the area to intervene in order to have a genuine and sustainable peace in the area, said lingering and rampant court cases over the matter violate our culture and tradition and suggested that the emirs and community leaders should be involved in peace building as it is in our tradition.
