As the global community observes World Press Freedom Day, the Nigerian National Committee of the International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) has issued a strong appeal for a strengthened commitment to press freedom and the enhanced protection of journalists across the nation.
In a joint statement released by Tobi Soniyi, Legal Adviser and Chairman of the Advocacy Committee of IPI Nigeria, and Ochiaka Ugwu, Secretary of the committee, the institute urged both federal and state governments to dismantle obstacles that impede the practice of journalism in Nigeria.
IPI Nigeria underscored the critical need for government bodies and security agencies to champion the rights of journalists instead of suppressing them.
“We call on the federal and state governments, as well as their agencies, to uphold press freedom by removing all obstacles to journalism practice in Nigeria,” the statement conveyed.
The institute specifically cautioned against the improper application of the Cybercrimes Act, highlighting its increasing use as a tool to harass and intimidate members of the press. IPI implored security agencies to adopt a more supportive stance in safeguarding press freedom, emphasizing that an independent and dynamic media is indispensable for the advancement of a better society.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by media professionals, IPI Nigeria commended Nigerian journalists for their resilience and professionalism in the face of threats and economic difficulties.
However, the organization voiced concern regarding inadequate remuneration and unpaid salaries, which it identified as substantial threats to the integrity of the journalistic profession. “We urge employers to provide fair remuneration. Unpaid salaries and poor pay threaten press freedom,” the institute asserted.
Observed annually on May 3rd, World Press Freedom Day serves as an occasion to celebrate the core tenets of press freedom, evaluate the condition of media worldwide, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the course of their work.
IPI Nigeria reiterated its unwavering dedication to defending media freedom and supporting independent journalism wherever it faces threats. “This is a time to reflect and recommit to the values of professional journalism,” the institute concluded.
World Press Freedom Day 2025 provides a pertinent reminder of the essential role a free press plays in upholding democracy, accountability, and transparency.
