Nigerian becomes first African to win global IAAP Impact Award

A web technology expert, Temitope Somuwa, has been honoured with the prestigious 2025 Individual Impact Award by the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP) at the M-Enabling Summit held in Washington D.C., United States.

Somuwa, a digital accessibility advocate and inclusion strategist, emerged as one of three global winners of the coveted award, standing out as the only African recipient in the category. The IAAP Impact Awards celebrate individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and tangible achievements in advancing digital accessibility and inclusion across industries.

Through his visionary leadership, Somuwa has established himself as a leading voice in promoting accessibility, compliance, and user-centred innovation. He has been widely commended for his hands-on approach to integrating inclusive design into digital ecosystems.

Under his guidance, his team underwent comprehensive accessibility training — an initiative that significantly improved awareness and adoption of inclusive practices across their organisation. His advocacy did not stop there; Somuwa extended his expertise internationally, voluntarily advising European colleagues on the implications of the upcoming European Accessibility Act (EAA). His insights helped prepare teams for compliance and fostered a stronger understanding of accessibility’s global importance.

The M-Enabling Summit 2025, themed “Digital Accessibility Innovation — A Deep Dive”, convened policymakers, industry leaders, disability advocates, and technology experts from around the world to discuss the future of inclusive technology. During the summit, IAAP recognised outstanding individuals whose work has created measurable improvements in accessibility awareness, implementation, and culture.

According to the IAAP, the Individual Impact Award is designed to honour professionals who “drive systemic change, break barriers, and inspire others to make digital spaces truly inclusive.”

Somuwa’s recognition is particularly significant for Nigeria and the African continent, where conversations around accessibility and digital inclusion are gaining momentum but still face structural challenges. His achievement underscores Africa’s growing contribution to global accessibility standards and inclusive design practices.

Industry watchers have, however, hailed Somuwa’s award as a defining moment for the accessibility movement in Africa. His recognition not only highlights the importance of inclusive digital transformation but also positions Nigeria as a hub for accessibility leadership in emerging markets.

The IAAP Impact Awards, presented annually during the M-Enabling Summit, honour individuals and organisations making outstanding contributions to accessibility and inclusion worldwide. The 2025 edition featured ten global nominees under the Individual Impact category, with three recipients ultimately selected for their exceptional achievements.
