Nigerian educator sparks student interest with STEM advocacy programme

Patrick Obot, a science and mathematics education specialist, is gaining recognition for his significant contributions to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Nigerian community schools through his pioneering initiatives.

Obot, who has served as a proposal reviewer for several professional organisations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and as Chair of a roundtable session at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) 2025 Annual Meeting—roles that demand strong research expertise—has also established himself as a leader in STEM education in Nigeria. His flagship initiative, the STEM Advocacy Program (SAP), has sparked a surge of student interest in science and mathematics in Ibeno Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

As founder of the Patrick Obot Foundation for Scientific Advancement (POFSA), Obot has used SAP to introduce participants to essential STEM topics, artificial intelligence, and instructional design, while helping both educators and students thrive in a rapidly evolving global landscape. To date, he has impacted more than 300 participants, positioning himself as a driving force in STEM advocacy in rural schools where students are now developing a strong passion for STEM fields—an area where Nigeria faces a critical need.

“This initiative provides critical interventions by introducing essential STEM topics, building capacity among educators, and inspiring students to engage meaningfully in science and technology,” Obot explained. “At the Secondary Grammar School, Ibeno, the program has significantly boosted student interest. “More of my students are now expressing a desire to pursue STEM subjects and are motivated to actively participate in science and mathematics,” said Mr. John Udoh, an English teacher in the school and a participant in the event.”

For Obot, early exposure to science and mathematics equips learners with critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills essential for navigating today’s complex, technology-driven world.

The STEM Advocacy Program (SAP), along with other initiatives spearheaded by Obot—such as workshops and conferences—continues to provide platforms that equip students and educators with cutting-edge skills, inspiring a new wave of learners to engage deeply with STEM subjects in rural schools.
