‘Nigerians must defend sovereignty against foreign interference’

Youths, CSOs storm Jonathan’s Abuja office, urge 2027 presidential bid

Professor of History and International Studies at the University of Ilesa, Osun State, Williams Fawole, has urged Nigerians to prioritise national unity and defend the country’s sovereignty against foreign interference and exploitation.

Fawole made the call during valedictory programmes and a book launch titled: Governance Crises and Contradictions in Nigeria’s International Relations, in honour of retired Professor of International Relations, Solomon Akinboye, held at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, University of Lagos (UNILAG).

In his lecture, he argued that while scholars and governments might offer recommendations on national issues, the role of ordinary citizens remained decisive in determining whether Nigeria would survive growing internal and external pressures.

Fawole described Nigeria as a fragile multinational state, shaped by historical fault lines that continue to expose the country to foreign exploitation.

The Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development Services), Prof. Foluso Ebun Afolabi Lesi, described Akinboye as a scholar committed to excellence and institutional development.

Ogunsola said the retired professor distinguished himself through mentorship, scholarship and dedication to advancing the discipline of international relations.

The Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, represented by Prof. Oludiran Akinleye, also commended Akinboye’s contributions, describing him as a calm and dependable problem solver within the faculty.

Head, Department of Political Science, Prof. Ferdinand Ottoh, described Akinboye as an academic whose over 40 years of service shaped generations of students and strengthened the department.
