Two more Nigerians, Oluwatobi Olasunkanmi and Ikenna Erinne, have proven to the world that the challenges facing their country cannot undermine the citizens’ pursuit of excellence to outshine their colleagues in various international competitions.

Olasunkanmi won the William Charnley Prize for the Best First Class obtained in the law programme of University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.

In the new international rankings from Times Higher Education, Cambridge remains one of the institutions performing strongly ahead of prestigious American universities like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford, Berkeley, Princeton, Yale and Columbia.

Both Cambridge and Oxford have moved up by at least one place, cementing their place in an elite group of six “super brands” for a fifth year in a row, according to the authors of the rankings, which they claim are a “head and shoulders above the rest.”

Twenty four-year-old Oluwatobi, who is son of former Youth Development Minister, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi, who hails from Osun State, happened to be the only student of black descent in the graduating set.

In an official correspondence dated June 26, 2015, and addressed to the “Best First Class law student, the university’s Senior Tutor, Dr. Philip Johnson, congratulated the Nigerian lad over the feat.

“Many congratulations on obtaining the best Hughes Hall First Class in your BA in Law. In recognition, the college has awarded you with the William Charnley Prize,” said Johnson.

Father of the award winner has expressed joy at his son’s achievement, noting that it has not only brought honour to his family but to Nigeria as a whole. “Sincerely speaking, my joy is not only because he is my son, but because he has represented Nigeria well by bringing a laurel, which has manifested in the best first class prize in law.”

Also, Erinne, who recently got his Doctor of Medicine from the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, United States was said to have made Nigeria proud by his outstanding performance.

According to a statement, the old boy of Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt, Rivers State and alumni of Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, U.S.A., at his graduation ceremony, got highly revered awards in Pathophysiology; First Year M.D Curriculum; Alpha Omega Alpha Honor; M.D Graduate Award Magna Cum Laude; Pharmacology; and Medical Microbiology.

“I am interested in Internal Medicine with a specialization in Cardiology. My career goals include Academic Medicine, Research, Global Medicine and creating efficient and sustainable healthcare systems in resource-poor countries,” he said in an online publication.

Erinne, who has since commenced his six-year residency and fellowship programme in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, U.S.A, hails from Ikija in Anambra State.
