AMID tight security the Kano state branches of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Unions Congress, alongside students’ bodies and other civil society organizations shut down Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) office, on Post Office road, Kano on Monday.
The action was in compliance with the directive given by the national office of NLC over electricity tariff increase.
Leaders of the protest met with the management of the distribution company behind closed doors.
The NLC Chair Kano branch, Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir, while submitting a protest letter to the special adviser to the governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Isah Yunusa Danguguwa, for onward submission to President Muhammadu Buhari, through governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, insisted that they were against the tariff increase.
“We consider the increase in the electricity tariff as illegal and unjustifiable. There is no significant improvement in the power supply. The increase does not look at the current economic recession,” Comrade Minjibir challenged.
He also assured that they would continue to protest against the increase, as directed by the national office of their union.
On his part, Danguguwa, he assured that the state government was solidly behind the organised labour in their decision to kick against that tariff increase, stressing that he would take the message to the governor intact.
“We are commending the organised labour for conducting themselves peacefully without wreaking any havoc in the streets.
“Rest assured that the people’s governor Comrade Abdullahi Umar Ganduje will take this message to Mr President, Comrade Muhammadu Buhari,” he encouraged.
“Your position is also our position. We are aware of the pains you took in supporting both President Buhari and governor Ganduje, in their coming to power,” Danguguwa said.
