The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has summoned an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting following the alleged invasion of its headquarters by armed security agencies on Wednesday night.
A notice of the meeting obtained by The Guardian showed that the meeting would be held virtually today (Saturday) at 4pm.The Guardian gathered that the meeting was summoned to enable the labour leaders to determine the appropriate response to the invasion and related matters.
The NLC General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, had told The Guardian that the congress was yet to hear from the Federal Government under whose purview the security agencies fell on why their office was invaded at night. He said the government must respond, and if they don’t, the organs will meet to decide on the next line of action.
“If they make it impossible for us to work then we too will make it impossible for them to work. If we can’t provide service to our members, they will stay back home because we cannot go there as we don’t know what they must have put there,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Labour Writers Association of Nigeria (LAWAN) has condemned the invasion of the NLC headquarters by the security agents. In a statement by the group’s Chairman and Secretary, Toba Agboola and Adenike Ajiboye respectively, the association said that it was outrageous and impunity taken too far by the security agents.
In a show of solidarity, the association denounced the action, describing it as a threat to democracy and industrial harmony.
“This act is in flagrant violation of fundamental human rights as enshrined in the 1999 constitution as amended. It is unfair, unjust and unacceptable. This show of shame must stop to save our hard-earned democracy,” the group said.
