The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho has reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, to another judge.

This came six months after the previous judge recused herself from the case of treasonable felony charge instituted against Kanu.

Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development, revealing that the legal team received two significant official letters ahead of their routine visit to Kanu.

The first, from the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), was in response to their formal request for administrative intervention in reassigning the case. The second, from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, conveyed the official notice of reassignment.

Kanu, through his legal team, expressed gratitude to the CJN for her swift response and the public for their unwavering support in demanding a proper judicial process.

According to Ejimakor, the delay since September 2024 had posed a serious threat to Kanu’s constitutional right to a fair and speedy trial.

“With these latest developments, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his legal team will now focus on preparing his defense,” Ejimakor said.

Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021, insists on his innocence and has repeatedly called for due process in his trial.

The reassignment of the case is expected to pave the way for fresh legal proceedings.
