The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has condemned a spate of attacks on its train services along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, warning that the incidents pose serious risks to passengers, staff, and critical infrastructure.
In a statement signed by its Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, the Corporation said the latest incident occurred around Kilometer 177, where unidentified individuals allegedly gathered near the track and hurled stones at a moving train, damaging the windscreen of the leading locomotive.
Unyimadu disclosed that similar attacks have been recorded in more than six locations along the corridor in recent weeks, including areas around Gidan Busa/Sarki Gora Village in Kakau District, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
“We are deeply concerned about the frequency of these attacks within such a short period. These acts endanger lives, disrupt operations, and amount to economic sabotage of critical national infrastructure,” he said.
He added that despite the challenges, train services have continued, with railway personnel maintaining heightened vigilance and implementing additional safety measures to ensure passengers reach their destinations safely.
The NRC spokesperson also acknowledged the support of security agencies working with the Corporation to secure rail corridors, noting that efforts are ongoing to strengthen surveillance, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice.
“We are working closely with security operatives, community leaders, and other stakeholders to curb this menace. However, we need the cooperation of residents along the corridor to report suspicious activities and discourage criminal behaviour,” Unyimadu stated.
He warned that persistent attacks could disrupt service delivery if not urgently addressed, stressing that the Corporation remains committed to safe and efficient rail operations nationwide.
