The National Rescue Movement (NRM), has ratified its newly elected national officers, reaffirming its commitment to national transformation and ideological politics in the wake of a leadership shake-up.
The ratification was formalised during an emergency national convention in Abuja, where Prince Chinedu Obi emerged as the national chairman.
Obi stressed that the NRM is not a coalition of “strange bedfellows,” but a movement of like-minded Nigerians committed to purposeful governance.
Other ratified national officers include: Alh Hassan Aminu, National Secretary; Dr Mustapha Kumchi, Deputy National Chairman; Magdalene Samuel Ghali, National Organising Secretary; Mr Peters Letsuwa, National Publicly Secretary; Cafimsoli Salisu, Musa National Auditor; Dr S M Oyeghe Deputy National Legal Adviser; Chief Victor Iweala National Welfare Secretary.
The convention also ratified the expulsion of key former leaders, including Ambassador Isaac Chigozie Udeh (former national chairman), Mr. Emmanuel Tagbo (former FCT secretary), Mr. Jenyo Ataunoko (former Ondo State chairman), and Ms. Agada Agnes (former Kogi State chairman).
Obi explained that the emergency convention followed a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on January 27, 2025, which was convened to address attempted hijack efforts and to fill vacancies left by deceased or suspended members.
He said: “This ratification marks a new dawn for the party and for Nigeria. We are the real National Rescue Movement, registered to rescue a nation with enormous resources but crippled by poor leadership.”
He emphasised the party’s foundational principles of rule of law, peace, productivity, and shared prosperity, adding that, “Leadership is not rocket science. We are ready to implement our manifesto and turn Nigeria around by converting our human and mineral resources into real development.”
Obi called on all Nigerians of goodwill to join the NRM’s effort to rescue the country from what he described as a dysfunctional state of governance.
Also speaking at the convention, NRM National Treasurer and Chairman of the Convention Committee, Mr. Shedrach Oka, outlined the urgency of the emergency gathering, citing a failed plot to undermine the party through “backdoor tactics.”
He noted that the convention addressed internal crises, filled three national officer vacancies, and consolidated the party’s leadership structure across all levels.
Oka said: “Following our INEC-mandated verification in December 2025, there were attempts to backdate decisions and hijack the party. This led to confusion and legal tussles. The emergency convention was necessary to correct these abnormalities.
“With restored discipline and structure, NRM is now well-positioned to offer Nigerians a credible platform and a true alternative to the current APC government.”
