NRS sets up committee to review taxation curriculum nationwide

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS)

The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) has inaugurated a Curriculum Review Committee to strengthen taxation education in Nigerian academic institutions and enhance the country’s tax administration system.

The committee, inaugurated at the NRS Academy in Abuja, is expected to review existing taxation curricula and recommend updates that reflect current tax policies, legislative reforms, and emerging global practices, including digital taxation.

Director of the NRS Academy, Mr. Adeolu Akinyemi, said the initiative was designed to modernise tax education and align academic training with the evolving needs of Nigeria’s tax system.

According to him, the review will be carried out in collaboration with the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) to develop a more structured and industry-relevant curriculum that equips students with practical competencies required in contemporary tax administration.

He noted that many taxation programmes currently emphasise theoretical learning, creating a gap between classroom instruction and real-world tax practice.

“The objective is to ensure that graduates entering the tax profession possess both academic knowledge and practical skills necessary to operate effectively within today’s tax environment,” Akinyemi said.

Officials explained that the revised curriculum is expected to enhance tax awareness, promote voluntary compliance among citizens, and support the development of skilled professionals capable of improving national revenue generation.

The committee is chaired by Prof. Aisha Hamman Mahmoud, Special Adviser to the Executive Chairman of the NRS on Research and Statistics. Its members include representatives of the Service, academic experts in taxation and fiscal policy, and professionals with experience in tax administration and policy development.

The committee will also engage educational regulatory agencies and professional bodies to ensure the proposed curriculum aligns with national academic standards while addressing the practical needs of Nigeria’s tax system.

The NRS said the initiative forms part of its broader commitment to expanding tax knowledge, strengthening institutional capacity, and promoting responsible tax practices nationwide.

The curriculum review exercise is expected to be completed within 60 days, after which the Service will announce plans for implementation of the revised programme.
