NSCDC arrests suspected cattle thief in Jigawa
The Jigawa Command of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), has arrested a 30-year-old man for allegedly stealing a bull valued at N180,000.
The State Commandant, Mr Muhammad Durumin-Iya, who did not mention the name of the suspect, disclosed this on Friday in Dutse in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He said that the suspect was arrested in Maikwaki village, Birnin Kudu Local Government Area of the state, on Thursday at about 1 a.m.
Durumin-Iya said that the suspect hails from Yabaza village in Kiyawa Local Government Area, while the bull belonged to one Malam Muhammad Sani of Zarenawa village in Birninkudu town.
Durumin-Iya said that the suspect was rushed to Federal Medical Centre Birninkudu for stitches on his head due to beating he received from the local people.
The commandant added the suspect would be charged to court as soon as he recovers.
Narrating his side of the story, Sani told NAN that the suspect arrived his home at about 12 mid-night and released three of his cattle from their tethers.
Tether is a rope or chain by which an animal is fastened so that it can range only within a set radius.
“I was already asleep when I heard some noise around 12 mid-night, so I decided to peep and see what was happening.
“Surprisingly, when I pointed my torch toward where my cattle are tethered, I discovered that four of them are missing, so I shouted for help.
” My neighbours and other villagers woke up and began to look for the animals, and three were found in the bush.
” One of us sighted the thief trying to escape with the bull, we trailed him and we were able to catch him in Maikwaki village.
‘’We immediately called officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in our area and they got him arrested,” he said.

Don’t you just feel the utmost pity for these cattle. This is cruelty to animals of the highest order. Haba no wonder you need a cutlass to hack your way through a Nigerian fillet steak. The waka that these poor creatures have done is enough to turn their flesh to iron hard muscle. And the funny thing is that our beef is actually full of flavour, but of such poor quality. We need to move from this level of itinerant nomadic cattle rearing. Please, Minister of Agric, my teeth and jaws are begging you, and millions of head of suffering cattle need the respite.
We will review and take appropriate action.
