Mr Gbenga Onayiga, the Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists’ (NUJ’s) Credentials Committee for the union’s 5th National Delegates Conference has assured delegates their safety.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the conference is scheduled to hold between July 22 and July 24 in Abuja.

Onayiga told NAN in Abuja on Monday that the committee had made adequate security arrangement to safeguard the lives of journalists during the conference.

“Definitely, many security agencies will be brought in; we are writing to the Police, the SSS and the civil defence. As usual, they will be around to give protection to all the delegates and observers.

“There shouldn’t be cause for worry for their safety; we assure them of their safety; nothing will happen; whoever wants to create problem will definitely be whisked out of the place and I know our members are very responsible.

“We must succeed; we are determined to succeed; we won’t allow any breach of the peace.

“We urge all our delegates to feel free to come to Abuja; our delegates’ conference is a forum where colleagues across the country, who have met three to six years ago will converge and celebrate journalism.

“We will celebrate our friendship; so it’s something every journalist looks forward to.“

Onayiga said that the committee had screened six candidates for the position of President.

NAN reports that candidates vying for the NUJ Presidency are Mustapha Lamidi (NAN), Aladenika Adelegan (AIT), Atunbi Bamidele (NTA), Abdulwaheed Odusile (The Nation), Obamuwagun Rotimi (Osun Radio Corporation) and Uzaka USA (Bayelsa Ministry of Information).

He commended the management of NAN for its commitment and support to the union.

“We commend NAN for its cooperation so far, NAN has been so wonderful as regards sensitising journalists and the Nigerian public on our delegates’ conference.

“So, we urge all other media Houses to emulate News Agency of Nigeria to promote our own union – the only umbrella body of Journalists in Nigeria, it’s our own, we promote others. So we should also deem it fit to promote ourselves.

“We are the builders of this country and we should lead by (example).“
