Obaseki commends agencies for improved security in Edo
State raised N3b through easier land registration, management
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said the state government’s synergy with security agencies has reduced kidnapping along the Benin-Auchi Expressway, assuring that government will continue to review its strategies to sustain the development.
The governor said this while reviewing the state of security in Edo, after a joint security meeting with heads of various security agencies at the Government House, Benin City.
“The reports showed that the security environment in Edo is relatively calm. Steps have been taken to ensure that incessant kidnapping and armed robbery along the Benin-Auchi Expressway are brought under control.
“We have seen a considerable reduction in incidents of kidnapping on that axis. We have seen a few more cases in the Uromi-Agbor axis and that is being worked on. We also considered a report on drug abuse by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).”
Obaseki explained that with the significant use of drugs and the correlation between the areas with increased use of drugs and crime, the state government was working with the NDLEA, civil society groups, religious leaders, non-governmental organisations, and the media to strengthen advocacy in highlighting the dangers of drug abuse.
“We also received reports about the increase in road accidents. From August 1, 2021, to date, we recorded about eight ghastly motor accidents and about seven people died from those accidents. We directed that further investigation should be carried out so that we can reduce the recurrence of such accidents,” he added.
Speaking, Edo State Commissioner of Police (CP), Phillip Ogbadu, who reviewed the security environment, said the police had undertaken various operations and reports had shown that it was safer to reside in Edo.
MEANWHILE, the Edo State government has generated over N3 billion in less than three years through the Edo State Geographic Information Service (EdoGIS) following the Obaseki-led administration’s reforms to ease the process of land registration and management.
Managing Director of EdoGIS, Frank Evbuomwan, who disclosed this in Benin City, yesterday, said the amount was raised between September 2018 and July 2021.
Evbuomwan noted that since the inception of the agency in September 2018, fraudulent practices in land registration processes have been eliminated through digitisation of Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-Os) compared to the past.
He restated the agency’s plan to open zonal offices in Auchi, Edo North Senatorial District and Uromi, Edo Central Senatorial District, before the end of 2021 to issue at least 10, 000 C-of-Os yearly.
“In the first 18 months of our existence, we generated about N1 billion, but between 2018 and July this year, we have generated over N3 billion,” he said, adding that EdoGIS had simplified the process of registering land ownership and reduced the timeline and burden in applying for land titles.
Noting that the ease and convenience in processing title documents for landed property had opened the state up for economic growth and attracted investors, Evbuomwan said: “Edo State is now the destination for prospective investors due to the speedy access to land documentation, titles and guaranteed landed property.
“Before the EdoGIS came on board, it took between one and three years to get C-of-O. The Edo State Government has simplified the process of obtaining land title and strengthened the security of land and titles by the Edo State Private Property Protection Law 2021.”
