Obi celebrates Heerey College at 20, donates ₦10m to institution

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Sunday joined in celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Archbishop Charles Heerey College of Health Sciences and Technology (ACHCOHSTEN), Nkpor, Anambra State, where he pledged fresh support for the institution with a ₦10 million donation.

The event brought together staff, students, alumni, and stakeholders in the health sector to reflect on two decades of the college’s contribution to Nigeria’s human capital development. Since its establishment, ACHCOHSTEN has produced more than 700 health workers now practising across Nigeria and abroad.

Obi, who has maintained close ties with the institution over the years, said Nigeria’s widening shortage of health professionals underscores the need for greater investment in education and training. He urged the matriculating and graduating students to see themselves as “global citizens” capable of competing anywhere in the world.

“Education remains the most transformative investment. I am always proud to meet ACHCOHSTEN graduates excelling in the US, UK, and elsewhere, who trace their journey back to this institution,” he said.

The former governor recalled his previous interventions at the college, which include donating a coaster bus, building a female hostel, and making regular financial contributions. He described ACHCOHSTEN’s growth into multiple health disciplines as “a legacy of service that deserves to be celebrated.”

Reaffirming his commitment to human capital development, Obi stressed that Nigeria’s future rests on competent leadership and resilient institutions in education and healthcare. “A new Nigeria is possible,” he added.
