Odili floats first private medical varsity
Former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Otunuya Odili, has joined the league of promoters of private universities in Nigeria. The proposed university, which goes by the name of PAMO University of Medical Science, would be the first private medical science university in the country. If approved, the university would be the second medical university in the country.
The first university of medical science and the third in Africa was established by Ondo State government on April 24, 2015. Already, the relevant documents, including the academic brief, physical master plan and the University law have been submitted to the National Universities Commission, (NUC) for consideration from members of the Planning and Implementation Committee (PIC) of the proposed university.
Receiving the documents, Executive Secretary of NUC, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, warned that the proposed university is a huge capital-intensive project that might not yield financial returns in the short run.
He stressed that only those who had the passion to give back to the society, could embark upon such a venture. He said when a good university stabilises, it would develop the capacity to sustain itself, and that due to the finances required to run a medical programme, not many universities could commence faculties in medicine.
The NUC boss said the joy of establishing a university lay in the lasting reputation that usually outlive the promoters, citing the case of the University of Virginia, which was founded by a former US President, Mr. Thomas Jefferson in 1693.
