Okocha bags promotion as professor of journalism, emerging media

Renowned scholar, Desmond Onyemechi Okocha

Renowned scholar, Desmond Onyemechi Okocha, has been promoted as Professor of Journalism and Emerging Media at Bingham University.

Okocha, who is the pioneer Dean of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the university, was promoted in a letter dated 13th March 2026.

The promotion, which according to the letter took effect notionally from October 2025 followed approval by the institution’s governing council at its 72nd regular meeting.

Okocha’s elevation reflects both his academic output and growing influence in media scholarship and policy engagement within and beyond Nigeria as his career spans academia, policy advisory, and international research collaboration.

He currently serves as a research fellow at University of Religions and Denominations and is a member of the Switzerland-based International Panel on the Information Environment.

Okocha also holds leadership roles within the International Communication Association Nigeria Chapter and the United Nations Association of Nigeria Abuja Branch.

With over 200 scholarly publications and more than 150 professional certifications, Okocha’s academic profile is shows multidisciplinary training across Europe and Asia.

He has supervised six doctoral candidates to completion, reflecting a sustained contribution to capacity building in communication studies.

Coming at a time of increasing recognition of emerging media as a critical academic field, particularly in the context of digital transformation and information disorder, Okocha’s work has been noted for bridging theoretical frameworks such as media ecology and development communication within the Nigerian university system, while also advancing new concepts, including what he terms “structured-deliberative gossip” as a measurable communication phenomenon.

Beyond academia, Okocha has engaged in policy and development work with the World Bank, the Global Fund for Women, and the Open Society Initiative for West Africa.

He also served as a Special Adviser on Digital Media and Strategic Communication to the Abia State Government.

In recent years, he has contributed to high-level policy discussions, including engagements at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies and national conferences organised by federal ministries and international organisations such as UNESCO.
