Okowa tasks Deltans on rice production


Delta state Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State has urged the people to explore the fertile land in the state to embark on rice production.He made the appeal in Asaba at the weekend at a town hall meeting with the people of Oshimili Local Council Area.

According to the governor, if the arable land is used to cultivate rice and other agricultural products, it could sustain the food security of the state and the nation.

He said the meeting was important to make the people participate in the process of governance by offering useful suggestions.Okowa explained that the state was participating in the


Central Bank of Nigerian Anchor Borrowers’ Farmers Programme on rice production to bridge the gap that would follow a total ban of rice importation.He also urged them to improve on waste disposal and environmental cleanliness and stop indiscriminate waste disposal.

“I advise you to use the Private Service Providers [PSP]’s facilities to dispose your waste and keep your environment clean,” he said.The governor disclosed that he had visited the construction work on Asaba airport runway, which he said would be the best in the south south when completed.

The governor disclosed that he would rehabilitate the internal roads in the state capital and construct pedestrian bridges at Summit junction and Abraka Market.He added that he would seek partnership with the Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC) for the construction of Ibusa Road Interchange.

He said the Asaba Township Stadium would be completed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), as the state plans to host the 2018 Senior African Athletics Championship.

On flooding, he said work on the Direct Labour and Jesus Saves Road Drainage would begin in October, while the drainage on Okpanam Road would be intensified.The Chairman of the council, Chuks Obusom commended the governor for holding the meeting to interact on issues.
