Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, at the weekend, tasked the National Universities Commission (NUC), on its regulatory framework, with a view to ensuring strict adherence to the rules and regulations governing the award of degrees and certificates in the country.

Okowa, who spoke at the 3rd combined convocation ceremony and 10th Anniversary of Novena University, Ogume, Delta State, remarked that only strict adherence by the public and private universities, to the commission’s rules and regulations, would ensure that educational standards are not breached, and the degrees awarded are accorded due recognition by foreign institutions.

The governor lauded the establishment of private universities, which he described as one of the biggest gains of democracy.
According to him private universities have no doubt, come to the rescue of several thousands of youths, who otherwise would have been denied university education due to the limited spaces in public universities.

According to the governor the emergence of private universities has also introduced healthy competition in the nation’s tertiary education. He stressed that the coming of private universities has resulted in the provision of quality infrastructure, improved curricula and competitive fees.

He urged today graduates to adapt to the dynamics of a rapidly- changing world to be able to excel globally, adding, “Today university graduates must possess excellent communication skills and knowledge of global socio-cultural issues, which would be matched by the ability to apply critical thinking and quantitative reasoning, in tackling complex problems.”

Okowa showered encomiums on the founder and Pro-chancellor of the university, Dr Chuks Ochonogor, for his vision, sincerity of purpose and unwavering commitment to building the university.

He asked the graduating students to be innovative, passionate and disciplined, in order to succeed in their chosen careers.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Chris Okorafor remarked that the mission of the institution was to provide educational opportunity and qualitative education for the youthsm, and to contribute its quota to the development of Ndokwa Nation.

Highlight of the convocation was the conferment of honorary degrees on former Senate President, David Mark; wife of Ogun State Governor, Olufunso Amosun, and Chairman of Rainoil Petroleum, Engineer Gabriel Ogbechie, among others.
