The Okun Development Association (ODA), the umbrella socio-cultural organisation of the Yoruba people in Kogi State, has expressed strong support for the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, while urging restraint in public commentary on political matters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the President-General of the association, Ambassador Akenson Rotimi, on behalf of Okun sons and daughters worldwide, commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Amupitan, describing it as “a clear endorsement of competence, character, and merit.”
Rotimi noted that the appointment is not only an honour to Okunland and Kogi State but also a recognition of integrity and capacity in public service.
“The confidence reposed in Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) is an honour to Okunland, Kogi State, and every Nigerian who believes that public office should reward integrity and competence,” he said.
The group pledged its unflinching support for the INEC chairman, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the electoral body at a critical time in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to ODA, Amupitan’s academic and professional track record reflects discipline, respect for due process, and strong institutional values.
“In every assignment he has handled, Prof. Amupitan has demonstrated the temperament, intellectual depth, and moral courage required to manage sensitive national responsibilities with fairness and firmness,” the statement read.
The association described him as a symbol of the core values of Okunland—honesty, hard work, humility, and selfless service—adding that his leadership would strengthen public trust in the electoral process.
“His commitment to building strong and impartial institutions is exactly what INEC requires to consolidate credibility in Nigeria’s electoral system,” it added.
While acknowledging that the office of INEC Chairman naturally attracts public scrutiny, ODA urged stakeholders, political actors, and citizens to channel grievances through appropriate legal and institutional mechanisms.
“We call for restraint in public commentary and urge Nigerians to grant Prof. Amupitan the necessary space to discharge his duties with neutrality, courage, and a strong sense of responsibility,” Rotimi said.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to national unity, democratic stability, and the success of the current administration, expressing confidence that Amupitan would uphold the integrity of his office.
It also called on Nigerians to support him with goodwill and prayers as he undertakes what it described as a solemn national assignment.
