Olam electrifies Kaduna community, installs bio-cooking gas for women

As part of its Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR), Olam Poultry and Feed Mills in Kaduna, yesterday, installed hybrid power generator, comprising solar panels and wind turbine in Chikuri community in Chikun Council of the state.

The company said the power generators, all together, is capable of producing two kilowatts of energy to electrify over 200 houses in the community.

The Guardian learnt that the community has been without power supply from the national grid. 

The initiator of the project, Kanak Gupta, said the choice of wind and solar power generation were chosen above other means for their sustainability and environment friendliness, adding that the initiative would transform the community into a more socio-economically vibrant area.

She said: “The two kilowatts energy being generated, which is the first phase for the project, is providing electricity for over 200 households, but more generators will be provided to light up the remaining 300 houses and streetlights in the community. 

“The reason why we provided two sources of power is to ensure that there is power supply backup, which will be enough to generate electricity for the villagers all time. When there is no sunshine, the wind turbine will provide energy, which will be stored into the inverters for usage over night.
