The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed teachers in public schools in Oriire Local Council to stay away from the schools.
The NUT gave the directive in view of the recent abduction of 39 students and seven teachers in some schools in the council area.
The abducted students and teachers are still in captivity as of the time of filing this report yesterday.
The union, in a statement signed by the NUT State Secretary, Salami Olukayode, directed teachers in the council to withdraw their services indefinitely.
Olukayode described the abduction as unfortunate, saying the incident has left a huge scar on the teachers.
He also disclosed that the national executives of the body had directed teachers in the local council to stay away from schools starting Tuesday May 26, 2026, until further notice.
Meanwhile, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, has described the rising wave of kidnappings and other violent crimes across the country as alarming, calling on governments and other stakeholders to take urgent steps to address the menace.
The monarch appealed for the installation of Mogajis and Baales at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan, where no fewer than 14 Mogajis from different families and seven Baales from various villages in Ibadanland were installed at the ceremony attended by members of the Olubadan-in-Council and other dignitaries from within and outside the ancient city.
The Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, who spoke on behalf of the Olubadan, lamented the growing insecurity in parts of the country, particularly the increasing cases of kidnapping, killings and violent attacks.
Also, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Solomon Ayoade, the monarch urged government at all levels, traditional rulers and other critical stakeholders to rise to the challenge of tackling insecurity before it spirals further out of control.
He also appealed to the Oyo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, as well as local council chairmen, to begin proper profiling of foreigners entering the state.
According to him, such measures would help security agencies and relevant authorities monitor movement into and out of the state more effectively.
He stressed the need for collective action among governments, security agencies, traditional institutions and residents to safeguard lives and property across the country.
