Omokri makes history with Victoria Falls abseil, climb
Reno Omokri, former Nigerian presidential spokesperson and bestselling author, has become the first Nigerian to abseil down and climb back up Victoria Falls.
The feat was accomplished on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025.
Omokri completed the descent and ascent of the Batonka Gorge, a 354-foot drop, without a guide, using only ropes and a harness. He wore protective headgear for the descent, which he completed in 2 minutes and 39 seconds, but removed it for the climb back up.
This extreme adventure adds to Omokri’s history of challenging climbs, including hikes on the Inca Trails in Machu Picchu, Peru, the Phnom Kulen mountain range in Cambodia, and treks in Nepal. He also flew over Mount Everest in 2019.
The event was witnessed and documented by James Chinotimba, Manager of Abseil Victoria Falls, and his staff. The entire feat was captured on video.
When questioned by Zimbabwean and Zambian journalists about his motivation, Omokri stated, “Nigeria is the greatest country on Earth, and the Nigerian spirit within me compels me to at least attempt great things to show the world through my lifestyle that the mainstream media is wrong about how they classify Nigeria.”
