On 53rd National Day, Cameroon urges peace, unity, eyes enhanced ties

Nigerian Armed Forces thrill crowds in Yaounde

Cameroon has reiterated its commitment to unity and peace in the region, emphasising the need for stronger trade relations with Nigeria and other African nations.

During its 53rd National Day celebration in Lagos, the country’s Consul General, Mrs Bibi Lobe, urged Cameroonians living in Nigeria to come for their voter registration, currently taking place at their Lagos Consulate, in view of the presidential election holding this year.

She stressed that it is an opportunity for them to exercise their civil right and make their voices heard.

Lobe said: “Legally recognised political parties need to have their presence registered at the Consulate, which is a polling unit, by sending their letters of appointment from the parties in Cameroon. Whenever we have a political activity here at the Consulate, we only see the ruling party, but that is not the image of Cameroon.”

We have different parties, and we want them to be represented because we have an obligation to give them a space to express themselves.” She explained that the national day was to celebrate their independence and unity in diversity.

Lobe lamented the low trade ties between Nigeria and Cameroon, expressing optimism that change was in view following the launch of the Cameroon Business Network in Lagos that connects and matches businesses in both nations to promote cross-border commerce.

They have also established an Economic Forum at the Consulate to showcase the country and attract investments, she added. In his goodwill message, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Special Assistant on Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Hauwa Adeeyo, said the celebration was a key moment in strengthening the economy and cultural connections between the two countries.

Director-General of Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Dr Chinyere Almona, noted that the occasion celebrates unity, strength, resilience, and oneness.

EQUALLY, a contingent of the Nigerian Armed Forces thrilled crowds at the programme held in Yaounde, the country’s capital. Their participation underlined the strong bilateral ties and military cooperation between both nations, “while reinforcing shared commitments to regional security, peace and prosperity.”

According to a statement by the Director of Information at the Defence Headquarters, Abuja, Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, the event was attended by Cameroonian President Paul Biya, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa.
