The Chairman of Owo Local Council Area of Ondo State, Tope Omolayo, has been suspended indefinitely over alleged gross misconduct.
The suspension, which takes immediate effect, followed a resolution passed by the legislative council of the local government under the leadership of its leader, Doyin Adebayo, during its sitting on Wednesday in Owo.
Eleven councillors participated in the sitting, with a two-thirds majority voting in favour of the suspension. The lawmakers said the action was necessary to uphold good governance and accountability in the council.
Announcing the decision, Adebayo urged stakeholders to remain calm, stating that the Vice Chairman, Hamed Ibrahim, would serve as Acting Chairman during the period of suspension.
According to the legislative council, the allegations against Omolayo include financial impropriety, violation of budgetary and revenue regulations, disrespect to traditional rulers, and conduct deemed unbecoming of his office.
The council said an investigation would be conducted fairly and transparently to determine the veracity of the allegations.
It also directed the Head of the Local Government Administration to effect changes to bank signatories to reflect the new leadership and ensure that all government property in Omolayo’s possession is returned to the council.
The legislative council reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and accountability, assuring residents of Owo that the decision was taken in the best interest of the local government.
