Ondo speaker re-elected, lauds Mimiko, others
INCUMBENT Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Jumoke Akindele, who won last Saturday’s election to represent Okitipupa Constituency II, under the aegis of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said that she would have remained loyal to Governor Olusegun Mimiko even if she had lost at the polls.
She stated this in Okitipupa after she was declared the winner of the election.
She spoke in Okitipupa and ascribed her victory to God and to the roles of her coordinators, friends, family and party members.
While speaking with The Guardian, she expressed gratitude to Mimiko, who, according to her, ensured that her hopes and aspirations were not dashed.
“I want to appreciate Governor Mimiko for making himself available, humbling himself and reaching out to all stakeholders to ensure we have a day like this. I most appreciate him and pray the Lord to continue to keep him.
“Words are not enough to express my gratitude, my appreciation, and indeed, I use this medium to pledge my unalloyed loyalty to him at all times and to assure him that regardless of what election must have brought, he would never have lost me as his follower,” she added.
The lawyer turned politician, who defeated the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Segun Lema, however, admitted the improvement on the performance of the card readers.
“I must confess, it worked a lot better yesterday than it did during the Presidential and National Assembly elections. The only problem I have is that the card reader is the selectiveness of its work,” she added.
Akindele assured her constituents and the entire state that the incoming House of Assembly would never relent in bringing the dividends of democracy to the people, and would continue the Caring Heart Projects she initiated for the state in her first term in office.
Already, Dr. Mimiko has commended the people of the state for their responsiveness to his call for continuity of good governance by ensuring the PDP dominates the local House of Assembly.
PDP won 21 out of the 26 seats of the House.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) while announcing the outcome of the election said that results of two Ilaje local government constituencies seats declared for the PDP out of the 21 won by the party are subject to ratification by the INEC Headquarters in Abuja because of violence recorded in the areas during the conduct of the elections.
Speaking at a special thanksgiving service held at the Chapel of Grace, Government House in Akure on Sunday to mark the impressive performance of the PDP at the Assembly election, Mimiko said that the success of the party in the election would sustain the peace and developmental stride of his administration with a view to adding more values to the lives of the people of the state.
He added that with the PDP having the majority in the State Assembly, the pace of development would be accelerated and the peace sustained.
According to him: “God has given victory to his people by proving the enemies of peace and progress of the state wrong. God has exalted his name above all other names.
“We prayed hard, we worked hard, God honoured His word. With this, the peace that we enjoy will continue, the developmental strides will continue, all these give us inner joy. We thank God Almighty, we thank the people of Ondo State, we appealed to them to support our party and they supported us.”
Also the wife of the governor, Olukemi appreciated the support of the people of the state for the victory, calling on them to jointly bless the name of God.
She said: “The people of Ondo State are peculiar people, we are reasonable people, we are people of wisdom. Glory be the name of God.”
