Ondo workers defy Mimiko over indefinite strike
Appeals made to striking workers in Ondo State yesterday by Governor Olusegun Mimiko fell on deaf ears as they stormed some major roads in Akure to protest against the non-payment of their five months salary.
The strike, which lasted for over four hours saw workers with placards with different inscriptions: “Mimiko pay our salary, we can’t feed our families. Workers are dying of hunger. Ise pupo, iya repete,” among others marched through the metropolitan city.
The chairmen of JNC, NLC and TUC, led them to block the main gate of the Government House, Alagbaka, preventing the state governor from entering the premises till he addressed the angry workers.
Governor Mimiko pleaded with the workers to suspend the strike because there was no adequate money in the government’s coffer to settle the accumulated salary arrears.
However, all the pleas by governor Mimiko for over two hours for labour leaders to shift ground fell on deaf ears.
