There was tension within the campus of Osun State Polytechnic (OSPOLY), Iree, on Tuesday as a deadly clash between rival cult groups left one person dead while four others were critically injured.
Though details of what caused the clash could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report, findings by our correspondent indicated that the incident occurred opposite the main gate of the institution.
A source, who pleaded anonymity told The Guardian that the clash which occurred in the morning caused tension and panic as students scampered for safety to escape being hit by sporadic gunshots fired by the cultists.
He hinted that the clash was between Rite Confraternity and Ave cult groups.
A video of the incident, spanning almost a minute sighted by our correspondent showed a victim being hacked to death by four assailants with axes and hammers.
When contacted, the dean of Students Affairs of OSPOLY, Dr Tope Abiola, confirmed the incident.
Abiola, however, explained that the clash did not occur inside the premises of the institution, disclosing that he was not aware of the killing of anyone but confirmed that about three persons were injured during the incident.
He disclosed that one of the critically injured victims was a former National Diploma (ND) student of the institution and did not give details of two other persons, who sustained gunshot injuries.
