One killed, others injured as APC, PDP supporters clash in Kaduna

There was pandemonium in Kaduna State yesterday, as one person was killed when supporters of All Progressive Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clashed in the city.

Also, several other persons sustained various degrees of injury in the fracas and were rushed to hospital in the troubled area where the clash occurred.

Two vehicles belonging to APC were set ablaze by rampaging rioters during the clash.

The supporters of the two political parties clashed in Kakuri and Kurmi Gwari areas of the city about 4pm when APC supporters went to the areas for governorship campaign ahead of Saturday’s election.

The areas are believed to be PDP strongholds.

However, an eyewitness said during the campaign, APC supporters were allegedly chanting offensive slogans and abusing PDP supporters in the areas.

“We don’t know why APC members should be threatening everybody in the areas. They came yesterday and moved around this place, abusing those who are not members of their party.

“One person was killed in the clash, but the death toll would have been more if not for the intervention of police, soldiers and other security agencies that took over the areas and stopped escalation of the crisis,” the eyewitness said.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Yakubu Sabo said: “I am currently attending a programme at the Nigeria Military School, Zaria, but let me send you my 2ic’s number to contact him for an update.”
Sabo gave the name of his 2ic as ASP Nafiu Habib, and when he was contacted on phone, he confirmed the incident.

He said: “There was a clash between thugs believed to be supporters of the opposition party and that of the APC during political rally where a state Assembly candidate was campaigning in Kakuri area.

“However, when we received the information, the police mobilised its men to the area and restored normalcy. Efforts are on to apprehend perpetrators of the incident.”
