OPC leaders demand resignation of service chiefs, convocation of security summit

Founder, Odua People’s Congress (OPC), Dr. Frederick Fasehun, has asked the nation’s service chiefs to resign honourably for “competent hands” to mount the saddle. According to him, that was the noble thing to do as “they have failed in their duties to secure the lives and property of the people.”

Also yesterday, the organisation’s National Coordinator and the Aare Ona Kankanfo of Yoruba land, Otunba Gani Adams, urged governors in the South West region to convoke a security summit on the killings in the polity.In an interview with The Guardian, Fasrhun noted that the world over, the concern of governments was to ensure that their citizens were safe, regretting that Nigeria has not fared well in this respect.

His words: “Nigeria is too insecure. The security chiefs do not need to be told to resign. They are incompetent, and if incompetency is what they have to show, then they are not fit to be in control of matters relating to the lives of the people. As gentlemen, they ought to do the needful.”Fasehun lamented that government officials were going about with armed security men while the citizens remain neglected.

According to Adams, the summit, which could hold in any of the state capitals, should also incorporate traditional, religious and opinion leaders as well as farmers, businessmen, herders and security agents in the zone.In a statement, the Aare Ona Kankanfo expressed dissatisfaction over the recent killings in parts of the federation.

It reads in part: “Strange things are happening in the country. Blood-thirsty maniacs are on the rampage, killing and maiming innocent Nigerians. The insecurity in the land is reaching an alarming peak.“Pitiably, the clear and present danger today is that the government seems helpless to address the situation.”
