The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State chapter, on Wednesday directed churches across the state to strengthen security measures, suspend late-night activities, and ensure their premises are fenced and gated amid rising cases of kidnapping and abduction.
The directive was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the association and jointly signed by the Oyo State CAN Chairman, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, and Secretary, Very Rev. Samuel Owolabi.
In the communiqué, which was made available to journalists in Ibadan, CAN expressed concern over the growing insecurity in the state and advised churches to adopt proactive security measures to safeguard worshippers and church property.
According to the association, churches should strategically deploy security personnel and install electronic surveillance devices within their premises and surrounding areas.
“Due to incessant abductions and kidnappings in recent times, Oyo CAN advises churches to be more security-conscious by strategically positioning security personnel and electronic devices within their premises and neighbourhoods,” the communiqué stated.
The body also urged churches to intensify prayers for the safe release of abductees and suspend late physical activities in view of the prevailing security challenges.
CAN urged churches without perimeter fencing and gates to prioritise such projects, while directing church leaders to engage trained security personnel, especially during worship services.
The association also called for security assessments of guards and other workers engaged in essential services within church premises and warned against allowing strangers to sleep in church auditoriums or compounds.
CAN urged residents to limit unnecessary travel and avoid late-night journeys. It also urged the public to comply with the executive order of Governor Seyi Makinde banning commercial motorcycle operations after 10:30 p.m. across the state.
While sympathising with families of victims currently in captivity, the association commended efforts by both the Oyo State and Federal Governments towards securing the release of abducted persons, particularly those involved in the recent incident in Orire Local Government Area.
The association called on government authorities to intensify efforts to secure the release of all abductees and reunite them with their families. It also urged restraint in the public dissemination of security-related information.
“CAN, Oyo State chapter, will continue to collaborate with the government to ensure the peace, unity and stability of the state,” the communiqué stated.
