Ortom’s wife seeks improved welfare for physically challenged persons

WIFE of the governor of Benue State, Mrs. Eunice Ortom has assured that all institutions with the objectives of changing the fortunes of disabled people in the state would be repositioned.

Mrs. Ortom made this indication while playing host to the management of the state rehabilitation board at Benue People’s House in Makurdi, reiterated the desire of the new administration to champion the cause of physically challenged people in the state.

The governor’s wife who noted that the key to unlocking the potentials of people with disability lay in the hands of those in leadership positions, hence her husband’s desire to reduce human suffering and create opportunities for all citizens of the state to live meaningful and productive lives.

“I undertake to promote and ensure the full realization of all human rights and fundamental freedoms for all persons with disability without discrimination,” she added.

Earlier in a remark, executive secretary of the state rehabilitation board lamented over the infrastructural decay at the centre for the rehabilitation of people with disabilities, and appealed to the Benue State governor’s wife for intervention to save the centre from total collapse.

Handicraft products from the disabled people were presented to Mrs. Ortom.

In another development, Mrs. Ortom has urged people of the state to step up efforts at reducing incidences of trafficking in persons in their communities.

She gave the advice when the zonal commander of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Mrs. Tina Ugwu paid her a courtesy visit st the Benue people’s house in makurdi.

The Governor’s wife, who described the act as a 21st century slavery which should be resisted by all, assured that her pet project which would soon be launched would accommodate victims of trafficking that would be rescued.

Earlier, the Zonal Commander of NAPTIP, Mrs. Ugwu said her visit was to seek collaboration from the first family towards tackling trafficking in persons by local communities in the state.
