Osun election: Parties place voters on oath over vote buying, others

For the fear of heavy security that might prevent vote buying in the Osun State governorship election, some political parties on Friday placed voters on oath before they were given money.

The Guardian gathered that intensive campaigns against vote buying forced the parties to engage in the pre-election inducement, which might still allow voters to vote according to their conscience.

A source, who confided in The Guardian said pre-election inducement was done on oath. He said, “By Friday evening, we were approached by most of the party agents to come and collect our election money but we had to swear on oath before they gave us the money.

“I have no problem collecting the money and swear to an oath because that is the party I have in mind to vote for. Other parties came to me, but I didn’t collect their money because I can not swear to an oath twice, it is dangerous.”

A paramilitary officer also confided in The Guardian that oath taking before payment took place in towns like Ilesha, Ile-Ife, Osogbo and Ikire.
