The Minister, during a meeting with heads of maritime agencies in Abuja, expressed concern over the incessant boat mishaps and stressed the need to proffer solutions to reduce it to the minimum.
The committee will review the happenings and recommend actionable plans to checkmate the menace.
The Committee includes the Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji as Chairman. The members are the Director-General of the Nigeria Maritime Administration Agency (NIMASA) Mr. Dayo Mobereola,, Executive Director of the Nigeria Institute of Oceanography and Marine Resource, Prof Sulle Abiodun, Executive Director of Nigeria Institute of Freshwater Fisheries Research (NIFFR), Dr. Attairu Sule, Principal Federal College of Freshwater Fisheries Technology Dr Olaosebikan, Technical Adviser to the Minister Prof Fakinlede and Mr Office.

The Terms of Reference to guide the Committee include but are not limited to; a review of existing commercial boat transport operations and assessments, boat mishaps and their causative factors; current boat operations safety & security compliance; and Existing boat specifications concerning acceptable standards.
The committee is expected to develop a comprehensive plan to address the findings from the assessment and guarantee safe commercial boat transport operations in coastal and inland waterways and develop standard design specifications for basic categories of commercial boats for coastal and inland waterways.
They are to consider any other related measures appropriate for safe and viable commercial boat operations on coastal and inland waterway transport systems that would address incessant boat mishaps.
The committee was given 21 days to complete the assignment and submit a comprehensive report to the Ministry.
