Oyo nursing college matriculates 147 students

The Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery on Friday held its second matriculation ceremony, with Governor Seyi Makinde as the special guest of honour.

The event took place at the college’s main auditorium in Eleyele, Ibadan.

Governor Makinde, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Soliu Abdulwaheed Adelabu, described the intake of 147 new nursing students as a significant step forward for healthcare in Nigeria.

“This matriculation ceremony, marking the college’s second for the national diploma programme, is a significant milestone for these aspiring nurses as they begin their journey to become healthcare professionals,” he said.

He congratulated the matriculants and urged them to embrace every lesson with an open mind while avoiding examination malpractices. He emphasised the importance of resilience in the nursing profession and encouraged them to uphold the college’s high standards of virtue and ethical conduct.

The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to the education system in Oyo State, particularly nursing education. He praised the college’s provost and staff for their dedication to fostering excellence and acknowledged the progress made to elevate the institution to new heights.

In her address, the Provost of the College, Dr. Gbonjubola Owolabi, congratulated the students and reminded them to adhere to the college’s rules while striving to be ambassadors of the institution.

“Let me remind you, our matriculating students, that you are now ambassadors of this great institution. Let excellence be your watchword, and may you go on to make remarkable contributions to the nursing profession and society at large,” she said.

She emphasised the importance of prioritising their studies and dedicating themselves to achieving their academic goals. Dr. Owolabi noted that the college remains committed to producing highly skilled and compassionate nurses equipped with theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and ethical grounding.

She also praised Governor Makinde for his unwavering support and commitment to the college’s development, citing several infrastructural advancements made under his administration.

The Director of Nursing Services, Dr. Arinade Oyebode, urged the students to familiarise themselves with the ethics of the nursing profession and encouraged them to study hard while putting God first in their academic activities.

A Professor of Nursing from the University of Ibadan, Prof. Chizoma Ndikom, also advised the students to stay dedicated to their studies and strive for academic excellence.

The event was marked by excitement and anticipation, as new student Islamiat Lawal received a reward from the commissioner, the provost, and other guests for her punctuality.
