Oyo school remains in shambles despite millions in allocation

The deplorable condition of the St. Eunans Primary School in Ibadan East Local Government Area, Oyo State, raises questions about the millions allocated to the educational sector in the state in recent years.

A visit to the primary school by a civil society organisation (CSO) revealed that the classrooms are in ruins, forcing children to learn under poor conditions.

The CSO revealed the discoveries they made upon their visit to the school in a post shared on X.

“We visited St. Eunans Primary School in Ibadan East Local Government Area, Oyo State, and what we saw was heartbreaking,” the post read in part.

“Three years after a heavy windstorm destroyed parts of the school, the affected classrooms remain in ruins. Pupils now squeeze into overcrowded rooms, while many parents have withdrawn their children due to safety concerns.”

This also places a burden on the teachers, who have to manage unmanageable class sizes and have been frustrated by this. The parents of the pupils also do not feel safe sending their children to study in the school, considering its deplorable condition.

This school remains in this condition despite the millions allocated to education in the state.

The CSO further revealed that ₦47.8 billion was allocated to education in 2020, ₦56.3 billion was allocated to education in 2021, and ₦54.12 billion was allocated to education in 2022.

Similarly, ₦58.21 billion was allocated to education in 2023, and ₦90.65 billion was allocated to education in 2024.

According to MonitNG, the deplorable condition of the school despite allocations, raises questions about the state’s commitment to education.

“The painful irony is that while these figures reflect a policy-level commitment to education, the children of St. Eunans are left behind in crumbling structures. Cracked walls, falling ceilings, and broken floors now define their learning environment. It’s no longer a classroom; it’s a risk zone.”

The CSO also appealed to the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, to renovate the school urgently and secure the future of the children.
